Our latest lesson covers some essential drumming skills! I'm going to share 6 core foot patterns I use regularly – both in the practice room at on the gig. These essentials for my feet give me the foundations to play more diverse styles, solo with greater creativity and sit on the groove better. They even help you develop better timing.

There are 3 basic patterns and 3 harder or more advanced patterns that are the fundamentals of some popular Latin styles from Brazil and Cuba. These are called Samba (Brazil), Baion (Brazil) and Songo (Cuba).

I can't stress how important independence between your hands and feet really is. I use my feet when I play almost subconsciously. The patterns I play anchor the groove and inspire my next move.

You can play anything with the hands over the foot patterns but a great place to start is with some essential subdivisions. These note grouping are the basis of the rhythms we play.

I really hope you get something out of this lesson. Start slowly and as always, let me know how you go!

Good Luck ;-)

Adrian
