Traditional vs Matched Grip

I'm a matched player. That said, Trad really interests me. I've studied it and have worked on it. I play differently. No doubt it has a different touch but I wonder if it's something that changes in my head that changes my playing. Maybe I suddenly imagine myself being Steve Gadd or something. I tend to play hard with matched – focused and energetic. Trad seems to make more pocket, finese and clean vibe. Maybe it's just me.

Thoughts?

Hello!

I, like you, are predomaintly a matched grip player.

However, I also play with traditional grip, and I can say it's very much a finesse-based technique compared to matched grip with it being more biased toward loud and powerful drumming.

I reckon there's a certain touch you get with Trad. It interests me.
That said, look at some one like Bill Stewart or even Dennis Chambers. Can play loud AND super soft.
Interesting…

All I play is traditional. Growing up I used matched, then swapped to traditional and never looked back.

Playing matched these feels totally uncomfortable to me. You get more feel I think, but probably lose alot of power.

Some good points there Glenn. I've experienced that touch/feel you speak of and the loss in power. But I guess if you work on it, you could get the power back – something I haven't done yet though ;)

I will keep investigating that's for sure.
Cheers.
