GIGS – Why does it feel so right when really you're playing too fast??? :/

Perhaps discussing this problem will help us all… It is bizarre… I was playing a gig a few weeks back and it felt sooo good, everything i played was perfect, it felt great, and i actually KNEW that i was playing it perfectly, it was such a great feeling.

But then i listened to the recording i took and things were not as great as I'd first thought.  It's like driving while your tired, the lines seem to be going past so slowly when really you are driving at 100km/hour.

Perhaps someone out there has some suggestions regarding how to overcome playing too fast at gigs.  Obviously there is a link here between the adrenaline of performing, or for some the nerves, but i feel i am always relatively calm before a gig.  I generally just hate the waiting and wanna get up there and play.

I have tried a few things, more recently using the lights of a metronome on stage to help with solid count-ins and getting through that first shaky minute that can be unsettling at times.  This was quite effective I'd say but i do find it kindof difficult to play to just a flicking light.

I'm starting to seriously consider playing to a click for the entire gig but find myself asking – is this just the easy way out?

Will it take away from the magic and danger of playing a live gig?

Perhaps over time it will improve my playing of the songs? as i will be forced to play the same tempo every time.

Here is a link discussing this problem and a good head start for anyone interested – http://www.drum-talk.com/forum…..C_ID=10659

Sorry i know there is so much that could be discussed and elaborated on here but any input great and small would be appreciated.

Cheers
